Our church recently hosted an event at the Blackberry Jack pub in Jersey Farm where we thought about whether it made sense to believe in God. Lots of people today are of the opinion that the answer is so obvious that it is not even worth spending time thinking about it. Only people who are infantile, stupid or weak would believe in the existence of any kind of “god”. But the more I think about it, the more convinced I become that this is an emotional (and prejudicial!) response, not a rational one. Does God make sense? Yes, not least because without God…

There would be no world! How can ‘something’ come from ‘nothing’ without someone making it happen?

There would be no morality! We would have no objective basis for absolute morality, only personal opinion.

There would be no Jesus! What kind of sane, ordinary and decent guy says that kinds of things about himself that Jesus does, unless he is much, much more?

If only a few more people would actually take the time to think about the issues with an open mind. It has surely got to be worth it. But then again, perhaps there is too much at stake?

Yours

Simon
